BACKGROUND
In recent decades, more and more attention has been paid to the role of mental factors in the onset and course of skin diseases. It is known, from this point of view the most unfavorable localization of rashes in the skin open areas and in the genital area. Studies reflecting the psychological diseases’ causes of the skin and mucous membrane of the penis are few; it’s little researched and mainly highlighted the problems of genital herpes or papillomavirus infection.
OBJECTIVE
To investigate the psychological characteristics of patients with eruptions on the penis to increase the effectiveness of therapy.
MATERIAL AND METHODS
A continuous prospective clinical study was carried out. Patients with diseases of the integumentary tissues of penis (n=51) were compared with a control group of healthy volunteers (n=40). The study was based on a questionnaire survey. The Beck Depression Index (BDI) and the Spielberger State-Trait-Anxiety-Inventory (SSTAI) were used.
RESULTS
The revealed signs’ interrelation indicates that most of studied patients at the time of examination were in a state of frustration and sensitivity and intrapunitivity were the characterological features of them determining the personal premorbid background and, as a consequence, a certain type of reactions to the psycho-traumatic situations (development of reactive depression, psychosis and neuroses).
CONCLUSION
The revealed personality traits of patients should be taken into account during consultations in order to reduce the impact of various provoking factors, timely exclude dysmorphophobia as a result of adequate psychotherapeutic and psychopharmacological rehabilitation. Timely consideration of psychological factors increases the effectiveness of chronic dermatoses’ treatment and reduces the likelihood of disease relapse.
