Dexpanthenol is synthesized in the middle of the last century and is a derivative of pantothenic acid. For external use, it penetrates easily into the skin, where it is converted into pantothenic acid, which is part of coenzyme A and, thus, is involved in the regulation of the synthesis of fatty acids and sphingolipids — components of the stratum corneum of the epidermis. Currently, in clinical medicine, dexpanthenol is used for systemic administration and most often for external therapy. The therapeutic effect of dexpanthenol during topical application is based on its ability to increase the mobility of the molecular components of the stratum corneum, participating in the implementation of the barrier function, as well as modulate the expression of genes responsible for regeneration processes. Dexpanthenol is used for local adjuvant therapy in ophthalmology, dentistry, otolaryngology, gastroenterology, surgery, gynecology. In dermatology, it is widely used for external complex therapy of dermatoses, care and repair of the skin. One of the combined preparations containing dexpanthenol is a four-component topical drug, which, in addition to dexpanthenol, includes mometasone, gentamicin and econazole. This product is released in the form of a cream. It is recommended to use for the treatment of acute and chronic inflammatory dermatoses, complicated by a secondary infection, or characterized by a high probability of secondary infection.
