Abstract:

The incidence of cardiovascular syphilis increased in recent years. Cardiovascular syphilis can develop at any stage of syphilis due to infectious-allergic process in the myocardium and vascular membranes. Early manifestations of specific cardiovascular lesions develop during early stages of syphilis, they are mainly functional, and in most cases are resolved as a result of specific therapy. Late forms of cardiovascular syphilis are associated with degenerative-dystrophic changes. Cardiovascular syphilis can develop at different stages of syphilis, as well as after specific treatment. Early diagnosis of syphilitic aortitis is a challenging problem due to the scarcity of clinical manifestations, possible similarity to pathologies of a different etiology, and complicated differential diagnosis. Specific cardiovascular lesions can occur in combination with neurosyphilis. The combination of specific cardiovascular changes with congenital heart defects can significantly complicate diagnosis. Here we report the follow-up study of a 58-year-old patient with cardiovascular syphilis in combination with congenital aortic valve disease. This study confirms the possibility of a long asymptomatic course of cardiovascular syphilis.
