Three groups of factors should be considered, when selecting the optimal pH value of the topical drug: pharmaceutical, pharmacological, and compatibility factors. Various buffer systems are introduced to drug base to maintain stable pH value. There systems can be monocomponent or bicomponent. We discussed the optimal conditions to select and maintain pH of the base, as exemplified by topical preparations containing corticosteroids.
