Modern scientific data on the epidemiology and pathogenesis of herpes virus infection, its transmission mechanisms and the main triggering factors are reported. The new data on the genetic nature of inadequate immune response to herpes infection are reported. Typical and atypical cutaneous clinical manifestations caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV) in the genital and orofacial areas are discussed. The features of the clinical symptoms characteristic of abortive forms of the disease are emphasized. The features of infection caused by type 1 and 2 HSV in women are pointed out. A detailed overview of methods and regimens of treatment of herpes infection is provided and the leading role of acyclic nucleosides is mentioned. The basic treatment regimens, i.e. episodic and suppressive, are discussed. The literature data on the efficacy and safety of Valvir in patients with various manifestations of the disease caused by HSV are presented.
