Abstract:

The objective of the present study was to compare the efficacy of complement fixation reaction (CFR), Venereal Disease Research Laboratory (VDRL) test, and microprecipitation reaction with cardiolipin antigen (MPR) for the analysis of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) obtained from 100 syphilitic patients. It was shown that the efficacy of CFR and VDRL test in terms of identification of positive samples was virtually identical and exceeded that of MRP by 2.4 and 3.5 times for diagnostic of symptomatic neurosyphilis and asymptomatic disease respectively. It is concluded that the VDRL test is a simple standard non-treponemic reaction that may be used instead of the laborious non-standardized liquorological test based on MPR that is routinely used for the laboratory diagnostics of neurosyphilis. MRP-based liquor testing is inefficient and yields frequent false-negative results in the repeated analysis of CFR and VDRL-positive samples. It is therefore fraught with the high risk of diagnostics errors.
