Abstract:

Results of clinical, morphological and immunohistological studies presented in this article confirm the immune nature of the mechanism of inflammation in patients with spot baldness (alopecia areata). This condition is believed to be underlain by the local CD4+ and CD8+ - dependent cytotoxic inflammatory reaction of T-lymphocytes that involves proinflammatory Th1 cytokines (IL-2, IFN-γ, TNF-α) and other cells of lymphohistiocytic infiltrate. The present study revealed direct correlation between the activity of the disease and immunomorphological changes in the skin of patients presenting with spot baldness and provided a basis for the recommendations of the pathogenetically sound treatment strategy.
