Abstract:

Aim — to analyze the outcomes of carotid endarterectomy (CEA) in advanced age patients (over 75 years). Material and methods. The study included 92 patients with supra-aortic vessels atherosclerosis (mean age 79.1±2.8 years) who underwent total of 113 CEAs. Comorbidities, surgical variables and end-point of “stroke + mortality” were compared in control (425 patients younger than 75 years) and main groups. Results. CEA prevents the risk of primary and recurrent stroke and improves the quality of life. The lack of significant difference in “stroke + mortality” value confirms the safety of CEA in advanced age patients. Conclusion. CEА is an effective operation in advanced age symptomatic and asymptomatic patients.
