Aim — to estimate the impact of class 1 compression stockings on cross-sectional area of superficial and deep calf veins in healthy subjects. Material and methods. 22 healthy volunteers (25 legs) were examined by duplex ultrasound. Among them there were 12 (55%) women and 10 (45%) men aged from 20 to 48 (mean 31,0±8,7) years. All of them had no symptoms and/or signs of chronic venous disease. The cross-sectional areas of great saphenous vein and one of the posterior tibial veins were measured at the same mid-calf level in the upright and supine positions before and after the application of compression class 1 knee-length stockings. The declared pressure of the stockings has been monitored using a special pressure tester. Results. The pressure exerted by stockings in the supine position varied from 11 to 23 (mean 17±3) mmHg, in the upright position — from 13 to 30 (mean 20±4) mmHg. The mean cross-sectional area of great saphenous vein in the supine position and no compression was 0,09±0,05 cm2, with compression — 0,07±0,03 cm2 (р=0,065), in the standing position — 0,11±0,07 and 0,09±0,03 (р=0,386) respectively. The mean cross-sectional area of posterior tibial vein in the supine position and no compression was 0,17±0,09 cm2, with compression — 0,12±0,08 cm2 (р=0,002), in the standing position — 0,19±0,11 and 0,17±0,1 (р=0,069) respectively. Conclusions. The application of class 1 knee-length compression stockings leads to a significant decrease in the cross-sectional area of posterior tibial veins in the supine position. No significant narrowing of great saphenous vein while lying and both deep and superficial veins in the standing position was observed.
