Aim — the objective of the present study was to assess the effectiveness and safety of managing patients with deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in need of urgent surgery due to abdominal or retroperitoneal tumors. Material and methods. A total of 63 patients with DVT in need of abdominal or retroperitoneal tumors surgery have been operated on after a short course of anticoagulant therapy with or without inferior vena cava filter placement or plication of the inferior vena cava. 22 patients primarily hospitalized for venous thromboembolism (VTE) were found to have tumors or their complications (uterine myoma with metrorrhagia) that needed urgent surgery. Other patients were hospitalized for the surgical treatment of the abdominal or retroperitoneal tumors and DVT revealed occasionally on duplex ultrasound. All the patients received a short course of anticoagulation therapy before surgery. Results. Malignant tumors were confirmed in 53.9% of the patients. Uterine or ovarian tumors were found in 68.3% of the cases. DVT was bilateral in 42.8% of the cases, floating thrombosis was diagnosed in 41.3%. PE was registered in 11.1% of the patients. Surgery was performed within 8.8±1.7 days after admission to the hospital. After surgery, 68.5% of the patients had no complications. Recurrent DVT was documented in 19 (30,2%) patients. Bleeding and pneumonia developed in 7.9 and 4.7% of the patients respectively. There were 5 deaths which were not associated with VTE. Conclusion. Surgery for abdominal or retroperitoneal tumors in the patients with VTE is possible after a short course of anticoagulant therapy and inferior vena cava filter placement or plication of the inferior vena cava, if necessary.
