Aim: to estimate the effectiveness of the treatment of venous trophic ulcers with the use of special knitted compression stockinette bandages. Materials and methods. 40 patients at the age from 31 to 74 years presenting with trophic ulcers (stage I - II-III of the wound healing process; average ulcer area 8,3±2,8 cm2). The patients were allocated to two groups, one comprised of 20 subjects using stockinette bandages the other consisting of 20 subjects using medical compression hosiery. Wound dressings were applied for topical treatment. Duration of the study was 2 months. Results. Wound healing was documented in 85% and 75% of the patients in groups 1and 2 respectively. The malleolar circumference changed from 26,2±3,1 to 23,7±2,3 cm and from 27,5±2,2 to 25,3±1,6 cm on the average. The degree of discomfort in the lower extremities of the patients of groups 1 and 2 estimated based on the visual-analog scale decreased from 7,4±1,4 cm to 1,8±0,6 cm and from 7,4±1,2 to 3,1±1,2 cm respectively. Characteristics of microcirculation evaluated by computed capillaroscopy improved by 25-39% on the average compared with the initial values. All the differences between the parameters measured were statistically significant (p<0,05). Conclusion. The results of the study confirm the effectiveness of both modalities of compression therapy used for the combined treatment of venous trophic ulcers. The combination of up-to-date wound coverings adapted to the stage of the wound healing process with elastic compression hosiery applied in the zone of trophic lesions is considered to be optimal for the purpose.
