Ultrasound duplex angioscanning with colour mapping of the blood low and construction of the Doppler curve were employed to study characteristics of regional venous hemodynamics in the popliteal vein including its diameter, peak blood flow velocity (PBFV), volumetric blood flow velocity (VBFV) during active muscle contraction (AMC) and relaxation, electromyostimulation (EMS), medium-stretch compression bandage creating a graded pressure (20, 40 or 60 mm Hg at point B), and combination of these procedures. It was shown that basal PBFV equaled 15.9 cm/s and substantially increased in case of AMC and EMS both using the bandage of 20-40 mm Hg and in its absence. The maximum PBFV value was recorded during EMS without compression (76.3 cm/s) and AMC without compression (55.3 cm/s). All variants of compression bandage significantly reduced PBFV both at rest and during muscle contraction. The maximum increase of PBFV (5.59-fold) compared with the baseline level during compression was documented in case of EMS combined with the bandage of 40 mm Hg. The basal PBFV was 223 ml/min and significantly increased only in case of AMC without bandage (up to 346 ml/min) and EMS without bandage (263 ml/min). The application of any variant of compression significantly reduced PBFV during both muscle contraction and relaxation. It is concluded that the hemodynamic response to EMS was comparable with that to AMC while the use of compression therapy promoted the reduction of the absolute PBFV values but increased their relative increment.
