The present paper summarizes the experience with the surgical treatment of 317 patients aged from 60 to 86 years suffering varicothrombophlebitis of the lower extremities. This group was dominated by the patients presenting with complicated chronic venous diseases. All of them had to undergo emergency surgery. The technical procedures ensuring the minimal traumaticity of surgical interventions, influencing the wound healing process and the course of the rehabilitative treatment are described. Much attention is given to the age-related changes in the patients' health conditions and peculiarities of operative techniques depending on the specific features of the postoperative period in the patients of advanced and senile age. It is concluded that the use of preserving surgical methods in the patients of elder age groups makes it possible to reduce to a minimum the frequency of postoperative complications and decrease the lethality rate associated with pulmonary artery thromboembolism.
