February 5, 2024 will mark the 60th anniversary of a legendary cardiac surgery. We are talking about one of the first in the world (and certainly the first in Europe) mammarocoronary bypass surgery. It was on this day in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) that Prof. Vasily Ivanovich Kolesov performed anastomosis between the internal thoracic artery (a. mammaria) and the anterior interventricular artery, distal to its stenosing lesion. The operation was performed from thoracotomy access without using artificial circulation (as we would say nowadays, off-pump). Thus, Kolesov restored normal blood flow in the main coronary artery and relieved a forty-year-old man of angina pectoris. The former patient, who took 20 nitroglycerin tablets a day, felt healthy again.
