Abstract:

The authors discuss development of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) physical status classification system. Over the past 80 years, this system has been repeatedly changed and improved. The latest edition includes an algorithm for assessing the physical status of not only adults, but also for children and pregnant women. Despite subjectivity of choice, the ASA physical status classification system is still the most common for assessing the physical status in the world.
