OBJECTIVE

To conduct an epidemiological analysis of the clinical practice of treating premature infants with signs of respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), born at a gestational age of 34⁰/₇-36⁶/₇ weeks, during the first 72 hours of life and clinical situations in which respiratory therapy was required additional therapy with surfactants.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Over the entire observation period, 27.153 children were born in five perinatal centers of the Central Federal District of the Russian Federation, 1.414 (5.2%) children were late preterm (34⁰/₇-36⁶/₇ weeks), of which 816 infants were admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (57.7%) and 729 required respiratory therapy (51.6%). For the analysis 120 medical records of premature infants with RDS, born at a gestational age of 34⁰/₇-36⁶/7 weeks, requiring respiratory therapy were selected. Children who received respiratory support due to infectious lung diseases, neurological disorders, and other diseases not associated with RDS were excluded.

RESULTS

The need for substitution therapy with exogenous surfactants was 52.5% (n=63; 95% CI 43.6-61.2) of all RDS cases and 8.6% of the total number of newborns who received respiratory therapy, minimally invasive surfactant administration was performed in 46 children (73.0%).

CONCLUSION

In every seventh late preterm (16.4%) need for respiratory therapy is associated with the development of RDS, of which every second infant needs surfactant administration.
