The impressions removed from the oral cavity in the case of their detachment from the moulding spoon should be regarded as unworkable because the surface layer of the impression material undergoes random deformation leading to disfiguring of the impression. The objective of the present study was to estimate the influence of the retention characteristics of the moulding spoons of different design and the importance of additional retention for the quality of the definitive impressions. Material and methods. The study included 5 volunteers and the use of 5 types of the moulding spoons for the upper and lower jaws. The impressions were prepared using the «Ypeen» and «Hydrogum» moulding materials. The organoleptic evaluation of the quality of the impressions was carried out in parallel with the questionnaire survey that involved 35 dental and orthopedic surgeons for the elucidation of their preferences. Results. The study has demonstrated that the use of additional methods for the improvement of retention, such as attaching the adhesive tape to the spoon edges, significantly improves the quality of the definitive impressions. Twenty seven (77.14%) respondents reported the use of such simple additional method as the attachment of the adhesive tape to the moulding spoon edges for the improvement of impression quality.
