Abstract:

Subjects and methods. Sixty-eight patients with vasomotor rhinitis and 64 with allergic rhinitis were examined and underwent a standard ENT examination, high-frequency Doppler ultrasound of the nasal mucosa, and functional tests. An aqueous acetylcholine solution was used to study endothelium-dependent vasodilation and a 1% nitroglycerine solution was to evaluate endothelium-independent vasodilation. Results. The acetylcholine tests could reveal substantially impaired endothelium-dependent vasodilation of nasal microvessels in patients with vasomotor and allergic rhinitis. The nitroglycerine test showed that the patients with allergic rhinitis had impaired relaxation mechanisms in the nasal vascular wall smooth muscle cells, which was not detected in those with vasomotor rhinitis. Conclusion. The regional mechanisms that regulate endothelium-dependent vasodilation in the nasal mucosa are impaired in the patients with allergic or vasomotor rhinitis. Laser coagulation of the nasoturbinal mucosa contributes to its surface sympathetic and sensory denervation of the mucosa, which optimizes the endothelium-dependent vasodilation of nasal microvessels, impairment of which was found in the patients with vasomotor or allergic rhinitis.
