OBJECTIVE

To assess the impact of COVID-19 and anti-epidemic restrictions during the pandemic on the health quality and lifestyle of technical universities’ students of Saint Petersburg.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

A cohort study was conducted in a representative sample of mainly undergraduate students of Saint-Petersburg’s technical universities from 2018 to 2023 yrs. Of the 234 participants, 44% (102) of whom were boys and 56% (132) were girls. All the sample members included in the study filled in the lifestyle and health condition questionnaires after the exclusion criteria were applied. A physician examined the students and measured their individual indicators.

RESULTS

The lifestyle and health status of students of Saint-Petersburg’s technical universities in the period before and after the lockdown introduced due to the spread of a new coronavirus infection, in comparison with equivalent data obtained in similar studies on the territory of Russia and in other countries, have been characterized. Changes in the lifestyle of students (including day regimen, time of electronic devices use, interest in sports, bad habits), changes in their anthropometric indicators, as well as functional indicators and tests have been analyzed. The obtained original results of the respiratory tests showed a change of hypoxia sensitivity in persons who had suffered from coronavirus infection.

CONCLUSION

Multidirectional changes of indicators describing the lifestyle and health quality of students in the early and late post-lockdown periods were demonstrated. Further analysis of the indicators in terms of stress and adaptation theory is needed.
