Aim of this study — to evaluate the medical effectiveness of the participation of family doctors in the early detection of glaucoma in the Republic of Azerbaijan. Materials and methods. In order to determine the role of the family doctor in the medical support of ophthalmological patients, a prospective study was conducted at the Polyclinic No. 3 of the Department of Family Medicine of the Azerbaijan Medical University (Baku). The sample size was 1000 patients who first contacted the clinic: 250 patients had been followed up by a general practitioner (family doctor), 250 — by a neurologist, 250 — by a dentist, 250 — by doctors of other specialties. Prior to referral to specialists, all patients underwent eye tonometry according to Maklakov’s method and an ophthalmologist’s examination. During treatment, all patients were examined by physicians, neurologists, dentists and other specialists. Results. The proportion of patients with intraocular pressure less than 12, 12—16, 17—21, 22—26, 27—31, 32 mm Hg and more in the right and left eye was respectively: 41.6±1.6 and 42.1±1.6%; 30.0±1.5 and 31.4±1.5%; 18.4±1.2 and 16.2±1.2%; 5.6±0.7 and 5.2±0.7%; 2.4±0.5 and 2.9±0.5%; 2.405 and 2.2±0.5%. In 10.5±0.97% of patients who first contacted the doctors of the clinic, there was an increase in intraocular pressure of more than 21 mm Hg. in the right eye and in 10.3±0.96% — in the left eye. The proportion of patients with visual acuity greater than or equal to 6/18, 6/18—6/60, 6/60—3/6 and less than 3/60 in the right and left eye was, respectively: 72.3±1.4 and 76.7±1.3%; 22.4±1.3 and 18.4±1.2%; 4.40.7 and 3.8±0.6% 0.9±0.3 and 1.1±0.3%. The third category of visual impairment (visual acuity less than 3/60) was rare, the second category (3/60—6/60) was diagnosed in a significant part of patients. For 100 patients who first went to the clinic in 2016, 4.6±0.7 cases of previously undiagnosed myopia, 3.8±0.6 — hyperopia, 2.2±0.5 — astigmatism, 1.4±0.4 — cataracts, 2.3±0.5 — glaucoma, 0.1±0.1 — diabetic retinopathy, 4.4±0.7 — other eye diseases were diagnosed with the participation of a family doctor. Conclusions. Using the professional knowledge and skills, a family doctor may carry out part of the diagnostic and therapeutic measures when observing patients with ophthalmopathology.
