A special survey covered a sample of 104 café and restaurant employees. It encompassed an inquiry to specify their smoking status and history data, as well as the taking and analysis of biosamples to objectively quantify the levels of tobacco biomarkers in the examinees. The analysis of the examinees' biosamples showed that all their types taken from smokers showed a manifold increase in the level of tobacco markers than those from non-smokers. At the same time, the biosamples from many non-smokers were found to contain a small number of specific tobacco markers, which should be referred to the sequels of their passive exposure to tobacco smoke. The median concentrations of two tobacco biomarkers (urine cotinine and hair nicotine) were virtually equal in people smoking only cigarettes and in those smoking only hookah. The findings may serve as evidence for the necessity of including the hookah establishments into the legislation regulations to create tobacco-free areas.
