The investigation dealt with the value of carotid artery (CA) duplex scanning in the early detection of coronary atherosclerosis. A cohort 33-80-year-old patients (n=143; 90 men and 53 women) who underwent high-tech study and treatment methods, including coronary angiography, transluminal balloon coronary angioplasty, and stenting, was examined. According to the degree of a CA lesion, the patients were divided into 4 groups: 1) 0-20% CA stenosis (n=27; 63.0±9.0 years); 2) 21-50% (n=13; 63.4±9.7 years); 3) 51-70% (n=6; 57.8±12.0 years); 4) ≥70% (n=97; 62.9±9.0 years). According to the data of our investigation, concomitant lesion of the carotid and coronary arteries was found in 74.8% of the patients. When the carotid arteries were involved, coronary artery lesion was noted in 92.6%, which determined the high sensitivity of carotid artery duplex scanning with its relatively low specificity; the absence of carotid artery lesion was associated with coronary artery involvement in 29.6% of cases. Analysis of lipid parameters showed no substantial differences in the values of total and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol in patients in relation to the presence of carotid or coronary artery lesion. The similar situation was seen with apo AI and apo B levels. Comparison of the presence and degree of coronary artery atherosclerosis with those of carotid artery atherosclerosis allows a conclusion that significant atherosclerotic lesion in one vascular bed is accompanied by pronounced arterial changes in other organs.
