Abstract:

Objective. To study the influence of low dosed hexavalent chrome on spermatogenesis and lipid peroxidation in testis of Wister rats. Material and methods. The experiments were performed on adult male Wistar rats weighing 230—250 g (n=40). The rats were divided into four groups: group I (control) — rats injected daily with physiologic saline intraperitoneally (i.p.) for 48 days; group II — received potassium dichromate (K2Cr2O7) at a dose 0,028 mg/kg daily i.p.; group III — received potassium dichromate (K2Cr2O7) at a dose 0,28 mg/kg daily i.p.; group IV — received potassium dichromate (K2Cr2O7) at a dose 2,8 mg/kg daily i.p. The level of lipid peroxidation was measured at the accumulation of dienes conjugate and malondialdehyde. Results. The decrease of spermatogenesis intensity index was observed (p<0.05), the increase of Sertoli and Leydig cells was found (p<0.05) and the increase of spermatids with micronucleus and percent of abnormal mitosis (p<0.05) was demonstrated. The activation of lipid peroxidation in gonads was accompanied by decreasing antioxidatic activity. Conclusion. Hexavalent chrome causes abnormal spermatogenesis. The mechanism of hexavalent chrome action is associated with lipid peroxidation activation.
