OBJECTIVE

To conduct a comparative analysis of the results of liver biopsy for focal lesions in a short-term hospital setting.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

A retrospective analysis of liver biopsy performed in a short-stay hospital was conducted at the S.P. Botkin Hospital from 2022 to 2023. Biopsy was performed in 121 patients, 53 males and 68 females. The average age was 63.4±8.9 years, the average ECOG score was 1.2±0.4. The selection of patients was based on the criteria developed at Botkin Hospital for liver biopsy in a short-stay hospital (checklist).

RESULTS

Biopsy was performed in 121 patients: 1 biopsy was taken in 68 patients and 2 biopsies were taken in 53 patients. Histologic report with diagnosis was obtained in 114 (94.2%) patients, 7 (5.8%) patients required repeat biopsy. The total number of early complications was 11 (9.1%), 8 of them minor and 3 clinically significant. Among minor complications, pain syndrome was diagnosed in 4 (50%) patients, bleeding from the skin wound in 3 (37.5%), and local reaction to anesthetic in 1 (12.5%). Clinically significant complications were: hemoperitoneum — 1 (33.3%), subcapsular hematoma of the liver — 1 (33.3%), sharply expressed pain syndrome — 1 (33.3%). No deaths were recorded.

CONCLUSION

Performing a liver biopsy in a short-stay hospital is a safe procedure and can therefore be used in other specialized oncology facilities.
