Objective — to evaluate the impact of the size of tongue squamous cell carcinoma, the degree of its differentiation, and biological markers of tumor cells on the probability of regional metastasis. Material and methods. Eighty tongue squamous cell carcinoma cases divided into 2 groups were examined according to the presence or absence of regional lymph node metastatic lesions. The tumors were classified according to tumor sizes (T1, T2, T3, and T4) and differentiation degrees (G1, G2, and G3). The expression of biological markers (p53, Ki-67, BCL-2, Cyclin D1, MMP-9, and CD82/KAI1) was studied in tumor cells. Results. A tumor smaller than 2 cm (T1) reduced the likelihood of metastasis compared to T4 (p=0.041; odds ratio (OR) = 0.077), the probability of metastasis did not differ significantly when comparing T2/T4 (p=0.217) and T3/T4 (p=0.912). The degree of tumor differentiation (G) and expression of p53, Ki-67, BCL-2, Cyclin D1, MMP-9, and CD82/KAI1 proteins by tumor cells was found to have no significant effect on the probability of metastasis. Conclusion. To predict the probability of tongue squamous cell carcinoma metastasis, it is necessary primarily to take into account the size of the tumor.
