Abstract:

The leading component of combination treatment for young patients with locally advanced cancer of the cervix uteri is now radiotherapy that gives rise to irreversible ovarian function blackout and hence to their substantially worse quality of life.The immediate results of treatment were analyzed in 50 patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix uteri, who had undergone laparoscopic ovarian transposition at the first stage of combination treatment before chemoradiotherapy. The average duration of surgery was 98.5 min. There were no cases of intra- and postoperative complications. Chemoradiation therapy was initiated within 7 days after surgery. Median follow-up was 23.8 months; no case of metastatic involvement of the gonads was revealed. Ovarian hormonal function was preserved in 31 (62%) patients after endoscopic surgery and preoperative radiotherapy. Laparoscopic ovarian transposition is a simple, reliable, and effective technique for preserving ovarian function and improving the quality of life in young patients.
