Advantages of connected automation in 2 clinical labs are presented. Implementation of track automation gives labs an opportunity to reduce and standardize Turn Around Time (TAT); to improve communication with physicians including reporting critical value; to reduce errors and working hours providing in future productivity growth without increasing staff. For examples, due to installation of connected automation in St. Mary’s Hospital in Montreal (Canada), lab managed to reduce manual interaction with a given specimen by 75%, it handled with the double increase of flow (up to more than 2.5 million reported results in a year) and achieved 27% decrease in working hours. They showed increased performance despite cutting of 35% full time employees. From the finance point of view, it`s important to notice a favorable ROI (return on investment) move. In 2014, Community Medical Center in Fresno (California, USA) replaced their previous automation system by newest high speed system Power Express developed by Beckman Coulter. They achieved significant improvements in TAT — 74% reduction for basic metabolic panel, from 89 minutes to 24 minutes. Implementation of Middleware Remisol Advanced with auto validation based on lab defined rules contributed into decreasing TAT as well. Deep workflow analysis is required to make a right choice of optimal automation solution and reach a successful implementation. It`s necessary to measure actual metrics in current workflow in a lab including TAT, duration of a sample handling on different stages, duration of delays/waiting times, instruments productivity, etc. Special software helps to simulate and visualize future metrics depending on proposed automation solution and taking into consideration possible growth in future.
