Abstract:

BACKGROUND

Melanoma is a highly aggressive non-epithelial malignant tumor that develops from melanocytes. Melanoma takes up the first place among skin tumors.

OBJECTIVE

To describe biopsy methods of melanocytic nevus and cutaneous melanoma, as well as reasons to them.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

An unsystematic review of Russian and foreign literature sources on the research topic, which was conducted using continuous sampling in PubMed, RSCI and eLibrary databases by keywords: nevus, melanoma, biopsy and their combinations, was presented. The number of sources equal 35 was analyzed. Search depth was 11 years. Search years were 2011–2022 yrs.

RESULTS

Reasons for biopsy of pigmented skin formation performing by oncologist are presented, various methods of skin biopsy in melanoma and the principles of taking biopsy material are described in detail.

CONCLUSION

Biopsy (excisional and incisional) of pigmented skin neoplasms followed by histological examination is gold diagnostic standard, that allows to make diagnosis and determine the stage in case of melanoma, as well as planning further examination and treatment.
