Recognition of Kaposi’s sarcoma (KS), which is much more often observed in HIV-infected individuals, is an urgent task.

OBJECTIVE

Consider the clinical signs of KS on the skin and on the oral mucosa, which may occur during a general examination of the patient.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Nine patients with multiple KS were under observation, of which 6 were HIV-infected and 3 were with idiopathic (“classic”) KS. All patients were examined clinically and serologically for HIV infection in the regional Dermatovenerologic Dispensary of Yaroslavl. Histological confirmation of the diagnosis of KS and oncologist consultation were carried out in the regional oncology clinic of Yaroslavl. All patients were also examined at the AIDS Prevention Center.

RESULTS

Clinical signs of HIV-associated KS and idiopathic KS may be similar: multiple, hemorrhagic, purple spots and plaques on the skin and mucous membranes; lymphadenoma. However, the symptoms of HIV-associated KS appear earlier, faster, and are localized on any part of the body (AIDS is formed). Idiopathic KS is initially most often localized on the feet and legs, but then disseminates indefinitely.

CONCLUSION

If clinical signs of KS are detected, an HIV test should be prescribed without waiting for histological confirmation of the diagnosis. KS is detected clinically, but the diagnosis is verified histologically (a directed search for histological confirmation of the diagnosis is required, especially in the initial stage of the disease).
