The purpose of the literature review is to study the diagnostic and therapeutic results of using balloon enteroscopy for the diagnosis and treatment of small intestinal pathology. An electronic literature search was conducted in the PubMed, Medline, and Cochrane Library databases. Systematic reviews, randomized controlled trials, prospective cohort studies, case series, and literature reviews were included. Balloon enteroscopy is a safe and effective method for examining the small intestine. Video capsule endoscopy may be useful before balloon enteroscopy. Single- and double-balloon enteroscopy demonstrate comparable results. Double-balloon enteroscopy has an advantage in the rate of achieving complete enteroscopy when compared with spiral enteroscopy. However, there is evidence of adverse side effects with balloon enteroscopy. Studies with a large sample size, homogeneity of patients, and complete follow-up will be useful for further study of this topic.
