Abstract:

The present study was designed to compare the efficacy of the treatment of 207 patients presenting with chronic hepatitis C using pegylated interferon alpha-2a and-2b in combination with ribavirin. The patients comprising group 1 (n=109) were treated with subcutaneous injections of pegasys (PEG IFN alpha-2a) and oral intake of ribavirin. The patients of group 2 (n=98) were given pegasys (PEG IFN alpha-2b) subcutaneously and ribavirin orally. The overall efficacy of antiviral therapy using PEG IFN alpha-2a was substantially higher than when PEG IFN alpha-2b was used, regardless of the HCV genotype. There were no significant difference in the efficacy of treatment between PEG IFN alpha-2a and PEG IFN alpha-2b in the patients having hepatitis C virus genotype 1. Those with HCV genotypes 2 and 3 much better responded to the treatment with PEG IFN alpha-2b than to the injections of PEG IFN alpha-2a. The patients given PEG IFN alpha-2a experienced a much more pronounced cytopenia and marked deterioration of the psycho-emotional state than in group 2. In contrast, the patients treated with PEG IFN alpha-2b exhibited a higher level of hyperthermia and more frequent dyspeptic symptoms. All adverse effects of the treatment were reversible within 1-2 months after the termination of therapy regardless of the duration of the antiviral treatment.
