Abstract:

One of essential elements in planning any prospective and retrospective clinical trial is estimation of minimal necessary sample size. In this manuscript, written as a lecture or brief guideline, the authors consider the main statistical problems including feasibility of an intended goal within the capabilities of certain institution; formation of groups depending on research goal; calculation of the number of patients to obtain statistically significant result. We reported an algorithm for obtaining a statistically significant result, both positive and, possibly, negative, within the framework of methodically well-organized research. The article is intended for residents, medical practitioners and researchers.
