Abstract:

Sleep disruption in the ICU is a part of Post Intensive Care Syndrome (PICS). This syndrome consists of several somatic, neurologic, social and psychologic issues due to ICU conditions which limits everyday life of a patient. In this paper we review the contemporary literature on the subject and detail the most often causes of circadian rhythm disruption, describe characteristic patterns of the sleep, effects of the sleep disruption and sleep assessment methods. Besides that, the routines to improve the sleep in the ICU are discussed.
