History of tracheal intubation: from first mentions to modern thoracic anesthesiology

Abstract:

Intubation of trachea is a routine manipulation performed everyday by anesthesiologists and intensive care specialists worldwide. This article provides literature review about airway management: from the first mentions in medieval codes with metal cannulas to modern journals with high-tech endotracheal tubes. The idea of airway management going back in centuries and is closely linked with medicine evolution. However, the most significant discoveries in airway management, resuscitation and intubation of trachea were performed by physicians and scientists of the 18th and 19th centuries. Their ideas formed the basis for future generations of surgeons and obstetricians, who tried to solve the problems of asphyxia and upper airway obstruction. With the development of surgery, operations became more traumatic and prolonged. That’s why techniques for maintaining airway management have been improved and new knowledges in the respiration and lung physiology have been appeared. The development of anesthesiology as a separate medical specialty marked the sphere of interests in the management of the respiratory tract to specialists in this field. Our review is focused on evolution of procedure of tracheal intubation.
