Objective. Data on successful use of the short-term sperm storage at 4 °C in 96 IVF/ICSI cycles. Material and methods. Short-term hypothermic sperm storage was applied in those IVF/ICSI cycles where the fresh ejaculated sperm could not be retrieved on the day of oocyte retrieval. Sperm was processed according to standard protocols followed by storage at 4 °C in glucose-based electrolyte free medium (EFM). Results. It was demonstrated that after 2 week storage, 52.0±3.6% (number of samples n=35) of spermatozoa regained motility. There was no significant difference in DNA fragmentation before or after 2 week storage: 8.5±2.5 vs. 11.2±3.1 respectively (p=0.11; n=6). The average duration of sperm storage in the IVF/ICSI cycles was 5.0±0.4 days (n=96), not beyond 2 weeks. The fertilization rate (2PN) was 78% and 74.9% of embryos developed to blastocysts. Clinical pregnancy rate was 34.4% (35.5% per ET) with 26 pregnancies resulting in the delivery of 34 healthy babies. Conclusions. Short-term hypothermic sperm storage is effective as a routine technique for IVF/ICSI.
