Relying on literature data, the authors illuminate the current approaches to the cytological diagnosis of salivary gland tumors, which are based on the 2017 Milan classification. The latter identifies 6 diagnostic categories that cover a wide range of non-neoplastic and neoplastic diseases of this localization. The proposed classification not only contains cytological differential diagnostic criteria for various salivary gland tumor and non-tumor diseases, but also, on the strength of literature data, correlates the diagnostic categories with the risk of malignancy and the clinical standards for the treatment of patients.
