Abstract:

The authors studied the results of treatment in 58 patients with neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC) of the stomach in the period 1999 to 2011. Surgical treatment was performed in 55 (94.8%) of the 58 patients, medical treatment was done in 1 patient. An immunohistochemical study using a wide panel of markers was conducted to morphologically verify the diagnosis. The one- and three-year survival rates were 61.3 and 34.7%, respectively. The low survival rates are due to the predominance (70%) of patients with Stages III-IV disease and to the high aggressiveness of this tumor type, which suggests that the patients with locally advanced and metastatic NEC of the stomach even after radical surgery have a very poor prognosis. Gastric NEC is a high-grade tumor with an aggressive clinical course.
