Microbial cells are constantly threatened by invasion of foreign genetic elements. There are many mobile genetic elements (MGE), including viruses, plasmids, transposons, that invade them. This provoked the development of various defense systems in bacteria and other microorganisms, such as restriction and modification, abortive infection, exclusion of phage superinfection, toxin-antitoxin modules, argonauts proteins, and an adaptive immune response. In this article, we will consider the systems of adaptive immunity of bacteria and archaea (CRISPR-Cas), their organization and functioning, data on their origin associated with self-replicating transposons of bacteria, casposons, and other MGE, their role in the regulation of virulence genes and other important bacterial functions, as well as data on the development of MGE systems opposing adaptive immunity.
