Abstract:

The article presents the consumption trends for various tobacco and nicotine-containing products in the population of the Russian Federation in 2019—2023.

OBJECTIVE

To study the impact of anti-smoking legislation on trends in the consumption of tobacco and nicotine-containing products in the population depending on gender and age.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

The consumption patterns of various tobacco and nicotine-containing products were analyzed based on annual online population surveys conducted in 2019—2023. Males and females (a total of 11.142 subjects) of age groups 18 years and younger, 19—29 years, 30—39 years, 40—49 years, 50—59 years, and 60—69 years from 85 regions of the Russian Federation participated in the surveys. Statistical analysis included calculating the percentages of consumers of certain tobacco and nicotine-containing products and their combinations. Consumption trends were estimated using linear regression analysis and moving average trendlines.

RESULTS

In 2019—2023, there was a steady downward trend in the consumption of smoking tobacco products. The increase in consumption of nicotine-containing products was observed in 2019—2021. After the introduction of 2020 legislation and regulations on nicotine-containing products, the increase in consumption of nicotine-containing products and hookah significantly slowed.

CONCLUSION

Monitoring through online surveys showed favorable trends in the consumption of tobacco and nicotine-containing products in the population and the effectiveness of legislative measures introduced in 2020.
