OBJECTIVE
To analyze the issue of virtual reality technology in the treatment of chronic pain from the standpoint of the P4 medicine concept.
MATERIAL AND METHODS
We analyzed the Web of Science, Scopus and PubMed databases using certain keywords (P4 Medicine concept, virtual reality technology, chronic cancer pain).
RESULTS
Virtual reality technology as a tool of digital medicine is a modern direction in organization of medical care within the framework of the P4 Medicine concept. We can implement the principle of personalization using virtual reality technology, i.e. to develop individual virtual scene for each patient with chronic pain. The principle of prevention is implemented through the virtual scenes considering the goal (prevention of chronic pain catastrophizing factors) and tasks in virtual world to reduce stress and anxiety, as well as increase physical activity. The principle of prediction implies creation of virtual scenes contributing to simulation conditions revealing predisposition to chronic pain. The principle of patient participation is implemented through virtual scene and specially designed scenario as positive emotional and behavioral coping strategy that allows the patient to consciously take part in rehabilitation activities.
CONCLUSION
To implement the P4 Medicine concept through virtual reality technology, neurologists, oncologists and psychiatrists with fundamental knowledge of pathogenesis of chronic pain should take part in development of virtual scenes and scenarios. The last ones will take into account the principles of personalization, prediction, prevention and participation.
