OBJECTIVE

To estimate the long-term results and complication rate after surgical waist narrowing without removal of ribs.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

There were 57 surgeries for waist narrowing with osteotomy of lower ribs followed by corset fixation of the chest between 2017 and 2020. All patients were females. Mean age was 35.6±5.0 years (range 29—48), mean BMI — 21.5±1.6 kg/m² (range 19—24). Waist circumference was measured before surgery, after 3 and 12 months. Patient satisfaction was assessed using a special scale.

RESULTS

Mean preoperative waist circumference was 73.3±4.7 cm (range 65—83), in 3 months after surgery — 64.9±4.4 cm (range 59—70), in 12 months after surgery — 65.9±4.2 cm (range 60—72). Mean difference in circumference after 3 months was 8.45±3.7 cm (range 0—13, after 12 months — 7.4±3.7 cm (range 0—13). Mean score of patient satisfaction after 12 months was 9.7±2.9 out of 12 maximum points (range 2—12). There was no wound infection. One patient had a false joint. Moreover, 5 patients emphasized unsatisfactory aesthetic results due to incorrect wearing of a corset.

CONCLUSION

The above-described method ensures effective and long-term reduction of waist circumference with a low risk of complications.
