OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the results of prepectoral implant-based breast reconstruction in patients with breast cancer.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

The study included 130 patients with breast cancer who underwent simultaneous mastectomy and implant-based breast reconstruction.

RESULTS

Polyurethane-coated implants were used in 69% of cases, textured implants — in 31% of cases. Most often, this reconstruction was performed in patients with cancer stage 0-IIa (87%). Sixty-two (47.7%) women underwent postoperative chemotherapy. Radiotherapy was performed in 35 (27%) cases including 60% of patients with polyurethane implants and 40% of women with textured implants. Some patients had complications associated with radio- and/or chemotherapy in most cases.

CONCLUSION

Simultaneous prepectoral implant-based breast reconstruction is a reliable and affordable method of breast reconstruction. The influence of radio- and chemotherapy on the risk of some complications is obvious. Improvement of surgical techniques and prevention of complications will allow a more effective prepectoral implantation for breast reconstruction.
