OBJECTIVE

To analyze bone resorption of around dental implants after vascularized fibular graft reconstructive surgery in patients with and without previous radiotherapy.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

There were 28 patients with defects and deformities of the upper and lower jaw. All patients were divided into two groups: the 1st group (21 patients) — reconstructive operations after resection of benign neoplasms and injuries (116 dental implants, Astra-tech system, Sweden); the 2nd group (7 patients) — reconstructive operations after resection of malignant neoplasms (35 dental implants, Astra-tech system, Sweden). Follow-up X-ray examination was carried out in 6-8 months after osteoplastic surgery.

RESULTS

In patients without previous radiotherapy, vertical resorption of bone tissue around the implant neck did not exceed 1.5 mm after 6 and 12 months in 99.1% of cases, after 18 months in 98.3% of cases. No resorption (<0.1 mm) after 6 months was observed in 24.4% of cases, after 12 months — in 17.4%, after 18 months — in 13.9% of cases. In patients after previous radiotherapy, vertical resorption of bone tissue around the implant neck did not exceed 1.5 mm after 6 months in 97.1% of cases, after 12 months — in 94.3%, after 18 months — in 91.4% of cases. After 12 and 18 months, vertical resorption was observed in all patients.

CONCLUSION

Bone resorption around dental implants depends on previous radiotherapy.
